Initial Response of Individual Soft Mast-producing Plants to Different Forest Regeneration Methods in the Ouachita Mountains

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Quality forest habitats provide not only the vegetation structure needed by wildlife, but also adequate resources such as food and water. Soft mast is an important component of forest wildlife habitat, comprising a great percentage of the seasonal diets of many wildlife species (Martin and others 1951). Soft mast from different plant species varies in nutritional quality (Halls 1977), and individual wildlife species may prefer certain types of mast. Thus, wildlife managers need to know what factors affect the abundance and production of individual soft mast species.

Initial Effects of Reproduction Cutting Treatments on Residual Hard Mast Production in the Ouachita Mountains
We compared indices of total hard mast production (oak and hickory combined) in 20, secondgrowth, pine-hardwood stands under five treatments to determine the effects of different reproduction treatments on mast production in the Ouachita Mountains. We evaluated mast production in mature unharvested controls and stands under four reproduction cutting methods (single-tree selection, group selecti...
متن کاملEffects of Reproduction Cutting Method and Hardwood Retention on Shortleaf Pine Seed Production in Natural Stands of the Ouachita Mountains
Shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata Mill.) seed production was monitored for 4 yr in stands harvested by a range of evenand uneven-aged reproduction cutting methods. The fifty-two 35–40 ac stands were distributed throughout the Ouachita Mountains from central Arkansas to eastern Oklahoma. Seed crops were characterized as good, poor, poor, and bumper, averaging 109,000, 18,000, 5,000, and 379,000 sou...
متن کاملShortleaf Pine Seed Production in Natural Stands in the Ouachita and Ozark Mountains
Seed production of shortleafpine (Pinus echinata Mill.) was monitoredfrorn 1965 to 1974 to determine the periodicily qf seed crops in both woods-run stands and seed-production areas. One bumper and two good seed crops occurred during the 9-yrperiod. The two largest crops occurred in successive years, then seedproduction was lowfor4 yr before another good crop occurred. Mean annual seedproductio...
متن کاملSmall-mammal responses to pine regeneration treatments in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma, USA
We compared the initial effects of four forest regeneration treatments (single-tree selection, group selection, shelterwood, and clearcut), and unharvested controls (mature, second-growth forest) on relative abundance of small mammals and smallmammal habitat throughout the Ouachita Mountains of western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. We compared small-mammal capture rates in 20 forest stands (4 ...

The heterogeneity of the forests west of the Mississippi River in the Southern United States is strongly influenced by physiography and topography. The west Gulf Coastal Plain of southern Arkansas, northwestern Louisiana, and eastern Texas features highly productive pine-dominated forests (Pinus spp.) on gentle terrain that are interspersed by major and minor alluvial bottomland hardwood forest...
